She stood in the Dixon light,
black and white against the green,
close enough that I could see
how pretty her lashes were
framing those gentle eyes.
I did not know then
what the pasture was preparing her for.
I only knew her calm
and the way she watched me.
Those eyes and lashes
still rise in my mind
across every year.
Never just meat to me.
